THE LONE RANGER (D+)

Bottom Line: A wannabe PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN-goes-western, franchise kick-starter that almost exclusively fires blanks...  Depp and Hammer possess a tinge of buddy-buddy chemistry, there's a few bits that do indeed work and you may even find yourself occasionally intrigued - but the majority of time spent onscreen is an exhaustingly unbalanced, indulgently desolate, hyper-violent and shockingly dull, 149 minute exercise on how to stop a blockbuster dead in its own tracks.  Its also, most certainly, not a film for the eyes of young children (even with the Disney logo prominently displayed above the title).  Scene to scene, the tone swings wildly from serious, to lighthearted, to screwball, to boring, to downright tedious - and makes for a must-miss time at the theaters (you might consider a rainy day, nothing-else-to-do rental).  Judging by the lack of early box office interest, if you do intend to catch this surprising dud in theaters - YOU will more than likely be the one that's lone.

Starring: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer and Tom Wilkinson
Directed by: Gore Verbinski (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 1-3, RANGO, THE WEATHER MAN and THE MEXICAN)
Rated: PG-13
Running time: 149 minutes
Story: From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, comes Disney/ Jerry Bruckheimer Films' "The Lone Ranger," a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice-taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption. I really don't get it. If you went in expecting old school Lone Ranger you were probably disappointed, but I think this was one of the best action comedies of the year.

My mom who grew up on the old school Lone Ranger even loved it. I over heard comment where people were disappointed, but if you went into a Johnny Depp / Disney movie to be serious, you shoulded be allow to go to movies.

I strongly believe the only reason this movie is failing financially is because the movie critics bad mouthed it so badly.

The critics didn't financially kill this - as of late, westerns have had a hard time generating interest. People not wanting to see it even before it came out killed it. Add that to what looked like a WILD WILD WEST meets SHERLOCK HOLMES retread where Johnny Depp plays the old west version of Captain Jack Sparrow and (I believe) most people felt like they had been there and done that over and over again.

I never watched the old Lone Ranger stuff so I went in with no emotional baggage. I simply wanted a more balanced, more engaging and more entertaining movie than what I was served... This was tonely all over the map.

Glad, however, that you and your mother enjoyed it - as that means YOUR money was well spent. I appreciate your opinions - thanks for reading
